We loved the resort and wish we were still there! It was almost too beautiful to comprehend. Here is our experience:
We came from Canada in early April and the resort was about 1/2 full. The suite we had in Explorer Cove facing the ocean was great, with about three other families that we saw in our area (and none of which we could hear even though they had little kids). We got room service every morning to eat out in the patio and it was always on time. Options for the food were limited, however. If we needed towels or more water we could request it through the app and they would be in the room after we got maid service. Maid service was easy, you just have to make sure you put the tag on the door that says you want them to come by. The air conditioning was almost too cold and we loved the fans in both bedrooms. Being so close to the beach was amazing. In the main room you could hear the bar at night but in the kids' room you heard nothing at all.
The airport transport was nothing to worry about - the driver was nice and there are a ton of speed bumps so nobody goes super fast. The kid's car seats were broken both coming and going from the airport, though, so luckily we brought some portable ones.
When we first arrived we were starving even though we had brought snacks and sandwiches. The flight, airport, and transport to the hotel was longer than we were able to plan for. We wish they had more options than Coco Plum available for our late lunch, because we couldn't get a good meal there as a family of vegans and they were not very flexible.
We also tried Coal and Copper one night, and despite advertising a partnership with a vegan chef, they only offered a tomato tartare without the feta and a cauliflower "steak" for vegans. No dessert. Very underwhelming considering the price tag. We did talk to reception about the vegan options and they were fantastic about accommodating us. The last night they made us a special family meal at the main restaurant, which made up for any lack of vegan options we had experienced. All you have to do is ask, basically. I will say we ate a lot of carbs for most meals in the main restaurant, though. Nobody got sick from the food or water.
We did not see any cockroaches. We did get bitten by mosquitoes, but not severely considering how much time we spent outdoors. Didn't notice any sand fleas. There was a cute little lizard on the wall in our foyer that we didn't mind at all. I didn't see or smell any mold, which is crazy because the area clearly floods often. I think they must do a lot of maintenance because as soon as one of the families near us left, they had people painting and fixing things in there. Maybe if you go when it is very busy they can't stay on top of it as well.
The kid's water park and the ocean were two major highlights. We were in the water 3 hours minimum every day. The weather was great until a bit of rain the last two days. We didn't do kid's club at all, but the other kids seemed to enjoy it.
We did one excursion on the last day - we went to a farm, cocoa plantation, and Miches. We enjoyed the first two spots a lot, but in Miches we only stayed for about 15 minutes where they took us to an overpriced tourist store. Seeing the town was neat, though, even though we only drove through it. The driver and the tour guide were great and super helpful with the kids. The cocoa plantation was just so darn cool.
The program had a lot on it but we missed a lot too. I would say most of the things to do were not up our alley, and since we don't drink much we skipped the night time festivities as well. The kayaking, snorkeling, and other water sports were pretty boring because there was only a really small area you could go, and there weren't many corals. The water was usually quite calm and very swim-able so we maximized on swimming. We didn't do any of the sports events. Most of the other families either kept to themselves or their kids were in kid's club so we didn't mix with them much. Basically we just wanted to relax and have fun as a family, and we did.
I was worried about every aspect before we left because we were traveling with young children, but we felt safe in the DR and generally in great hands. The seclusion of the beach was amazing, and the quality of service and care from the staff basically guarantee that we will be back. Definitely not during the busy season for us, though.
