Old School Club Med
I’ve been going to Club Med for about…gasp…40 years! Originally went there because they were the first to offer Kiddie Clubs and had visited Cancun when it was all adult. Although I met up with a friend I met in Club Med Turks, I think my best way to advise here is as an adult travelling without children. I usually travel solo and would choose Turks if I wasn’t meeting up with a friend,
That is me, now let’s talk Cancun!
Probably the only reason I go to Club Med over other resorts is because of the staff whose jobs it is to also be social. Over the years this aspect has diminished but…NOT SO at Club Med Cancun!
It has been over a decade since I have experienced the great level of social interaction with G.O.’s that was the cornerstone of Club Med but it is alive and well at Club Med Cancun. My favourite times were dining with front desk crew Fabiola, Lalo, and Daniel to be followed by an amazing conversationalist called Jersey. In addition, for the first time ever a serving staff gentleman at the smaller restaurant Taco Deco made the list!; Mario ,and that is hard to do when you don’t have the time to just idly chat. He is management material.
I understood that Fabiola was finishing her contract and going home actually before I left. Hope she rejoins the Club Med family in the future.
I am pointing the people out because I travel alone a lot and in a family village people can make or break a vacation. My buddy and I usually go to the all adult Turks and will return there, it is better for adult travel but dang, the excellence socially in the staff at Cancun is old school!
I booked really early and Club Med got rid of their tennis courts after I booked; replaced it with a water park thing to soon be opened. I play tennis 5 times a week and if not travelling with a friend that would have killed it for me. I would have never booked Cancun if I knew they got rid of their tennis courts and instruction.
For anyone with mobility issues the resort will be challenging. The main restaurant is up two flights of stairs and often there are places like coming out of a restroom that has a stair. The pool was rather unremarkable.
There was an incredible acrobat show one evening that surpassed the acrobatics I’ve seen at other club meds over the years. It was so amazing that I questioned if I was the same species!
I’ve travelled with family and alone and I prefer other clubs except for the attitude of the staff at Club Med Cancun, never forget that it is the staff, and the staff alone that has set club Med apart.
Whomever is behind the scenes keeping this concept alive at Cancun gets my high five! Could it be the Chief de Village?
I have been to, and some many….Sonora Bay, Cuba, Paradise Island, Fort Royal Guadeloupe, the other one in Guadeloupe, Turks Ixtapa, Kemer Turkey, Kamarina Sicily, Turks an Caicos over 14 times, Cancun as an all adult village and others.
Yes, at one time there was a Club Med in Cuba!
I had a hard time giving the star rating because the staff at Cancun is top notch but I prefer the smaller Ixtapa if looking to Club Med Mexico travelling alone or with family. Travelling alone pick Turks and hope for the old Club Med concept working at Cancun.
